Description: Sculptural agave of impressive size. Dark green leaves with significant terminal spines and marginal teeth. Used traditionally in Mexico for pulque and spirits, it is relatively low in sugar but high in terpenes that give off robust aromas of jalapeño, poblano chile, and white flowers. A breathtaking agave that grows comparatively well in clay (though it prefers well draining soil) and needs less water than many varieties. It is well suited to Northern California growing so long as you have the space. Has dry farming potential once established. Our plants are seed-grown, meaning they carry unique genetics and morphology, and in our experience seed-grown plants perform notably better than pups or bulbils when transplanted.
Estimated Size: 8-10ft height and width.
Estimated Time to Maturity: 10-15 years.
Propagation: Pups, seed.
Uses: Spirits, pulque, landscaping.
Care: Full sun, high drought tolerance, hardy to around 24°F (but snow can damage). Suggest planting 11-12ft centers and 8-10ft down the row.
Note: There is a great deal of scientific and academic literature, as well as practical experience from Mexico, regarding the lifespan of various agave species. In our experience, however, this information is not always correct for agaves grown in California--and in Northern California in particular, where most species have a limited track record of production. Our maturity estimates represent our best guesses based on our review of available information and the speed at which agaves are growing for us. Your experience may vary!
