Plant Care
Agaves are beautiful, long-lived plants. They can thrive in Northern California with plenty of sun, well-draining sandy or rocky soil that is mildly acidic, and temperatures that do not stay below freezing for long. Water needs vary significantly by variety, but in general we recommend planting in Spring, watering new plants weekly for the first one to two months until the plants start to put out new growth, then every 2–3 weeks in summer and not at all in winter. Agaves rarely need fertilizer, and many varieties are easy to propagate by separating pups–while others reproduce solely by seed, which can also be advantageous if pups are not desired (i.e. in landscaping). To keep plants healthy, avoid overwatering and watch for pests like the agave snout weevil, scale, gophers, and deer.
