Description: Beautiful, fleshy, grey-green agave with curved leaves that are rough to the touch, have strong leaf imprints, and feature a large, dark brown terminal spine. A. mapisaga var. lisa is one of the largest agaves known, but this is a different variety–and may be a hybrid of lesser size. A prodigious pupper, it can put out dozens of pups (if not more) per year. Cold tolerant, relatively low water needs, and a perennial deer favorite (making us think these plants are unusually sweet and juicy). Does not show significant frost damage. A great option for colder, wetter winters.
Estimated Size: 6-8ft height and 6ft width.
Estimated Time to Maturity: 10 years.
Propagation: Pups (a large amount), bulbils.
Uses: Spirits, landscaping.
Care: Full sun, high drought tolerance, hardy to around ~24°F. Suggest planting 11-12ft centers and 5-6ft down the row.
Note: There is a great deal of scientific and academic literature, as well as practical experience from Mexico, regarding the lifespan of various agave species. In our experience, however, this information is not always correct for agaves grown in California--and in Northern California in particular, where most species have a limited track record of production. Our maturity estimates represent our best guesses based on our review of available information and the speed at which agaves are growing for us. Your experience may vary!
